New research project:

"Micro Study on the Effects of Short-Term Rentals in the City of Salzburg" (Sponsor City Salzburg: funding period 2018-2019)  

Building on the investigation of short-term leases in Salzburg (SBGAirbnb) for the Austrian Federation of Cities (06 / 2018-1 / 2019), the current research project investigates the concrete effects of short-term lettings in central Salzburg districts. Specifically, socio-spatial effects and especially the perception of the neighborhood are explored. The following research questions will be examined: 1) How does the short-term rental of apartments affect the neighborhood? 2.) Which everyday world changes are named by the different actors on the ground? 3.) Which conflict forms and negotiations of conflicts exist?

The new Silk Road - from the Stations of the Cross of cultures to the Eurasian Exchange Corridor

The Silk Road connects in a symbolic way Europe and Asia. After a long period of Cold War, exchange has become possible again for nearly three decades in the name of globalization which ties in with ancient Chinese traditions and opens up to contemporary ideas of modernization. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hermann Kreutzmann (Free University of Berlin) illuminates in his lecture, organized by Geocompass Salzburg, from a historical and geographical perspective the effects of the Silk Road as well current and future development potentials.

DAS ABSCHMELZEN DER GROSSEN EISGEBIETE - KANN ES DAS KLIMAABKOMMEN VON PARIS NOCH VERHINDERN

PROF. DR. DR.H.C. Graßi Hartmut

In der Klimageschichte pendelte der Meeresspiegel seit 800.000 Jahren im Eiszeit- Zwischeneiszeit-Rhythmus von etwa 100.000 Jahren um ungefähr 120 Meter bei typischerweise 5°C mittlerer Temperaturänderung an der Erdoberfläche. Wird bei weiterem Anstieg um 1°C und damit insgesamt 2°C Erwärmung durch uns Menschen das grönländische Eis verschwinden oder gar die Antarktis teilweise abschmelzen? Dann stiege der Meeresspiegel im Mittel um ca. sieben Meter und bei starken regionalen Unterschieden sogar noch höher. Sind solche Szenarien denkbar oder nur der Fiktion entsprungen? Der Referent, der zu den weltweit führenden Klimawissenschaftlern gehört, fast zwei Jahrzehnte lang das renommierte Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie in Hamburg leitete und die Klimaerwärmung bereits in den 1980er Jahren voraussagte, versucht Teilantworten zu geben.

Organisiert wird die Veranstaltung vom Geocompass Salzburg.

The Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research of the University of Salzburg happily announces the call for papers for its 2017 Salzburg Conference in Interdisciplinary Poverty Research. The focus theme of the conference will be religion and poverty.
The Keynote Speakers in 2017 will be Paul Cloke, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Exeter, Adam Dinham, Professor of Faith & Public Policy and Director of the Faiths and Civil Society Unit, Goldsmiths, University of London, and Emma Tomalin, Professor of Religion and Public Life at the University of Leeds, where she is director of the Centre for Religion and Public Life.
The Organizing Committee invites submissions of proposals for single papers and thematic panels in all areas of poverty research but special attention will be given to those concerned with the 2017 focus theme of religion and poverty.

Project Wissensstadt Salzburg

The working group socialgeography is actively involved in the project of Wissensstadt Salzburg. In cooperation with the street magazine Apropos and the Centre for Ethnik and Poverty Research (ZEA) we are preparing a lecture on social integration of street newspaper vendors. We base our talk on research results of students of geography of the University of Salzburg.

The lecture will take place on Friday 5^th of May, 13:00, at Mirabell Palace. After a lecture there will be the possibility to take  a workshop by Apropos. Interested persons can take on the role of a stree newspaper vendor.

Materiality, Symbolism and daily routine of the Sofian Gated Communities

(Raumproduktionen: Theorien und gesellschaftliche Praxis, Volume 24)

At the end of the 1990s little-known, Gated Communities meanwhile have become part of the visual appearance of cities in Eastern Europe. How did this development come about? Which political, economic and social parameters contributed to this kind of building boom? Which social power relations are responsible for the observed development? And who are the inhabitants? Why do people decide to live in Gated Communitis and what is their daily life about? Christian Smigiel analyses these questions using the example of the Bulgarian capital Sofia by availing different approaches of critical urbanism. Hereto he examines Bulgarian transformation processes as well as the arrival and the impact of neoliberal urban policy. Furthermore he analyses the backgrounds of the financialisation of living space by taking the example of Gated Communities and exposes strategic arrangements between (inter-)national real estate industry and public purse. Besides Christian Smigiel sketches conflicts, lifestyle and social conception of the inhabitants of Bulgarian Gated Communities.

International Land Use Symposium (ILUS) 2015 - Trends in Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Settlements and Infrastructure
